Island publican is fined for smoking

An island publican caught smoking openly in front of her customers was fined €500 yesterday and ordered to pay €1,500 to the HSE for costs.

District Court Judge Mary Devins was told that Lourdie Cafferkey, of Dooagh, Achill Island, Co Mayo, was smoking when two environmental health officers entered her pub.

Hotel death investigated

State Pathologist Marie Cassidy will today carry out a post mortem in an attempt to discover how a 70-year-old man died in Ballina, Co Mayo.

The man's body was discovered yesterday in a chalet at the Downhill Hotel in the town. Gardai have said that they are keeping an open mind as to how he met his death.

Colleges agree strategic alliance

TRINITY College, Dublin, and the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy have agreed to a "strategic alliance" on the teaching of religion.

The two bodies are currently in negotiations and finalising the details of the programmes. Both of the educational bodies teach religion and theology. The new institute will provide both education and research.

Cow-crash farmer gets €175,000

A FARMER was yesterday awarded €175,000 by the High Court for injuries he suffered after the vehicle he was driving collided with a cow on a public road in Co Roscommon.

Thomas Mullarkey, Carane, Castleplunkett, Castlerea, sued Michael Earley, Runnamoat, for damages arising out of the accident at Ballinaheglish, Co Roscommon, on November 23, 2004.

Depression hits one in five carers

ALMOST one in five family carers have been medically diagnosed with depression, with many "literally house-bound" by their roles.

The first-ever national study of carers found more than half had a medically diagnosed condition which, in many cases, was caused or exacerbated by the stress of their work in the home.

Man recovering after stabbing

A MAN is recovering in hospital after he was stabbed in the hip. It happened at about 10pm in an apartment on Burton Street in Kilrush, Co Clare, on Wednesday.

The 55-year-old victim is being treated in Ennis General Hospital but his injury is not believed to be life threatening.
