Irish drinking 550 pints each per year
IRISH adults are unknowingly drinking more than recommended, knocking back an average of 550 pints of beer each every year, according to a new report.
The study from the Health Service Executive (HSE) shows that over the past decade stronger alcoholic beverages are being sold in larger containers through off-licences.
Now officials want bottles to be labelled with clear health warnings, in particular for pregnant women and for those taking medication, driving or operating machinery.
'A Standard Drink in Ireland, What Strength?' shows that the average Irish person takes 21 standard alcoholic drinks a week -- just over 10 pints.
Catherine Murphy, assistant national director for health promotion at the HSE, said the new report highlights the dramatic expansion in the range and alcohol content of products on the Irish market.
"This, combined with the absence of clear labelling, militates against making healthy choices," she said.
The recommended upper weekly limit for alcohol intake in Ireland is 14 units for women and 21 units for men.
