A DUBLIN based graphic designer became an overnight viral sensation with his vision of how a new Irish currency might look.

Con Kennedy, got the idea for a tongue-in-cheek return to the punt while driving to IT Carlow where he lectures.

“I was listening to the radio about defaulting and the Euro and Ireland pulling out and I was thinking how we could follow the homage to Irish patriots on the old notes. Hence the choice of people...”

He has designed a Punt Nua featuring familiar faces associated with Ireland’s financial collapse and loss of sovereignty.

And he attributes most of the blame to Fianna Fail and Anglo Irish Bank.

Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern graces the new £1 punt while former Finance Minister, the late Brian Lenihan, is chosen for the £5 punt note.

Former Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy is chosen for the £10 punt and former Taoiseach Brian Cowen is the face of choice for £20.

Former Anglo chief David Drumm is his pick for the £50 and former Anglo chairman Sean Fitzpatrick is the face of the £100 punt nua.

He put up his new designs for punts on Twitter and to his surprise saw that he was trending almost immediately.

“I haven’t put a design on the back. It will be blank to save costs on printing,” he joked.
