Irish corporal's George Cross sells for €80,000
A GEORGE Cross awarded to an Irish World War Two hero has sold at auction for a world record €80,000.
The medal, which was awarded to Irish corporal James Patrick Scully from Crumlin in Dublin, was sold to an anonymous bidder at 50pc over the guide price.
Mr Scully received the honour for his heroic efforts to save civilians during the blitz on Merseyside and went on to be immortalised in the comic book 'The Hornet'.
At the age of 31, the corporal came to the rescue of two people trapped in rubble at a collapsed house in Birkenhead in March, 1941.
He and fellow soldier Charles Chittenden pulled the pair from the building.
The George Cross is second only to the Victoria Cross as an award for acts of bravery.
Mr Scully's four sisters and son were present at the sale at Dix Noonan & Webb, specialist medal appraisers and dealers in London.
