Independent body chair is ex-journalist with background in philosophy and art

By Louise Hogan

Saturday February 25 2012

THE chair of the independent review of the national children's hospital of Ireland has a background in Philosophy and Art History.

Jonathan Erskine's 'virtual' resume posted on the UK-based Durham University website provides a detailed list of his involvement in conferences, reports, papers in academic journals and research projects.

It gives his grounding degree as a BA in Philosophy and Art History completed in the early 1980s, before he went on to work for a number of years as a technical writer and journalist, and later as an IT manager.

After studying Natural Sciences with Open University, he went on to join Durham University in the centre for clinical management development before later joining the centre for public policy and health as a research associate in 2008.

Mr Erskine, in his position as executive director of the research body, European Health Property Network, organised conferences and workshops throughout Europe and spoke on health care issues.

His position as chair of the Independent Review of the national children's hospital of Ireland is listed among the 'Indicators of Esteem' that are judged as marks of respect within the research community.
