President Michael D Higgins led mourners last night at the removal of the remains of the mother of Attorney General Maire Whelan.

Katherine (Katie) Whelan, of Kinvara, Co Galway, died peacefully on New Year's Day. Her husband John died some years ago and she is also survived by two other daughters and four sons.

Mr Higgins is a personal friend and former lecturer of Ms Whelan. She had studied sociology and politics under him during his time as a lecturer in NUI Galway.

The President was accompanied by his aide-de-camp, Commandant Murt Larkin, as he offered his sympathies to the Whelan family.

The remains were removed to St Colman's Church in Kinvara and the funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon today, with burial afterwards in Mount Cross cemetery.

Also attending last night were Finance Minister Michael Noonan, Environment Minister Phil Hogan and Children's Minister Frances Fitzgerald. Junior Minister Ciaran Cannon was also present.

The Taoiseach was represented by his aide-de-camp, Commandant Michael Treacy. Enda Kenny will personally attend the funeral today.
