Healy-Rae in line for €20,000 Oireachtas post
Tuesday October 23 2007
INDEPENDENT TD Jackie Healy Rae is among those expected to be appointed to Oireachtas posts worth €20,000 today.
Tom Kitt, the Government Chief Whip, will propose a Dail motion to establish 13 traditional Oireachtas committees and three new committees -- on EU scrutiny, the Constitution and the Good Friday Agreement. The remaining four committees will be appointed later in the week.
Mr Kitt said he expected the names of those appointed to head the committees would be finalised by the end of today.
Fianna Fail TDs such as Peter Power, Charlie O'Connor and Mary O'Rourke are also expected to be among those appointed to the lucrative posts.
Fine Gael had argued for an increase in its representation following its strong general election performance.
It will now get four committee chairperson posts -- including new committees on climate change and EU scrutiny -- and five vice chairperson jobs. Labour and the Green Party are also expected to get one committee chair each.
