Government approval of 33 top positions in An Garda Siochana not enough say representatives

By Independent.ie reporters

Tuesday February 07 2012

THE approval of 33 top positions in An Garda Siochana to fill gaps left by retirements is not enough, the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors warned today.

The appointment of two Assistant Commissioners, eight Chief Superintendents and 23 Superintendents were approved at today’s Cabinet meeting.

According to the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, the promotions will "not begin to address the total of 200 vacancies expected by the end of February".

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice said: "The matter will be kept under close review by the Minister, in consultation with the Garda Commissioner, and his colleague, the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform".

Mr Shatter said that garda strength at the end of February is expected to be 13,551, compared with 13,755 at the end of 2007.

But the AGSI said people have been on the promotion lists since 2009 and this announcement will come as a further blow to them.

The Association said frontline supervisory ranks will continue to be "decimated under this announcement".
