Global ghoulfest in a haunted gaol

By Ralph Riegel

Sunday September 28 2008

GHOULS, goblins, witches and warlocks are to dominate proceedings at a special ghost convention staged in one of Ireland's most haunted buildings.

The 8th World Ghost Convention takes place on Halloween night in the old Cork Gaol -- a building reckoned to be one of the most haunted in the country after almost 200 years of associations with convicts, rebels and executions.

The event will feature a host of attractions for those fascinated by things that go bump in the night, including everything from ghost talks to spirituality readings and from theatrical demonstrations to paranormal lectures.

Amongst those taking part will be Cobh's famed 'White Witch of the Isles' Helen Barrett -- who has predicted events ranging from the death of John F Kennedy Jr to various natural disasters.

The organisers are thrilled with the venue -- and claimed the history of Cork Gaol perfectly matches the subject matter.

The prison was finally closed in the aftermath of the Civil War and was re-opened, after a lengthy restoration, as a visitor centre in 1993.
