Giving it some wellie at charity race

Saturday January 02 2010

WHILE most people were lying in bed with a new year hangover yesterday, others were out for a run. In wellies.

More than 650 people took part in the 30th annual Wellie Race in Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny, yesterday.

Braving the cold and icy conditions, the runners of all age groups ran the three-mile course to raise money for 46 local and national charities.

Organiser Chubby Brennan said they were thrilled with the crowd of around 9,000 people who came to the town to watch the race -- especially after gardai recommended they postpone because of the weather.

He expects they will have raised around €43,000 from the event.

"Last year we collected €48,000 so despite the recession we're not far off. It's a tough course, so fair play to everyone who did it," he added.

The first man to finish was Michael Coyle of Naas, while Breda Mulcahy Roche from Castlecomer took the women's title. The first male veteran to complete the course was Jim Boland from Co Wexford, while the first female veteran was Margaret Dillon from Castlecomer.
