Gaybo criticises 192kmh speeding sentence

ROAD safety supremo Gay Byrne last night accused a judge of being far too lenient by not disqualifying two men caught speeding at more than 190kmh.

In an unprecedented attack, Mr Byrne also said his Road Safety Authority (RSA) is now "totally wasting our time".

The RSA chairman said Judge John Neilan was "far too lenient" and the two speeding "imbeciles" were "very lucky" as other judges would have put them off the road. They were fined €2,000 each.

"I'm angered by the sentence. I would have banned them for two to three years and then given them a clatter of penalty points to welcome them back onto the road," Mr Byrne told the Irish Independent.

"I'm coming back from a two-day meeting of the authority in Ballina. In light of these guys we are totally wasting our time.

"These two men are imbeciles. What they were doing was extremely dangerous, driving at 120 miles per hour." He said the sentence, a €2,000 fine, sent out "the wrong signal".

"They were very lucky that they came up against this judge. I don't know why anyone could be so lenient."

Mr Byrne added: "This is just bloody depressing."

In fining Alberto Rizzini of Port Loman, Mullingar and Tommie Gorman of Milltownpass, Judge Neilan said he had to be conscious of previous sentencing.
