Gardai continue to quiz Brazilian man over knifing
Monday October 26 2009
GARDAI are continuing to question a 30-year-old man in connection with the death of a Brazilian woman stabbed more than 40 times at a house last Thursday.
A post-mortem on the body of mother-of-three Joselita da Silva confirmed she died from internal trauma as a result of stab wounds to her stomach and chest at her home on Tara Street in Tullamore, Co Offaly.
The man, who was hospitalised with non-life threatening injuries after the incident, was taken into custody after gardai discovered the body of 33-year-old Ms da Silva.
A Brazilian national, he has lived in Ireland for seven years and was treated for cuts to his hands, neck and stomach.
After he was discharged from hospital on Saturday night he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act -- and can be held for up to 24 hours.
Ms da Silva, who was from the province of Goias, was due to fly back to her native Brazil next week to bring her two younger sons over to Ireland, her husband Jose said.
Her remains are expected to be released to her family in the coming days and she will be buried in Brazil.
