Four postal workers suffer fractures on frozen footpaths

By Allison Bray

Tuesday January 12 2010

FOUR An Post workers had to be hospitalised after falling on ice yesterday, with one postman suffering a fractured skull.

Postmen are struggling to stay upright because of treacherous roads and pavements covered in slush and ice.

The bad weather has resulted in hundreds of slips and falls by postmen and women across the country.

Dublin proved particularly lethal, with two postmen from Dublin 5 suffering fractures, as well as one in Swords and one in Finglas.

"We've never seen anything like it," An Post spokeswoman Anna McHugh said.

However, thawing conditions across much of the country yesterday has helped to clear some of the backlog of deliveries that was created by adverse weather conditions last week.

But various troublespots remain -- including Cobh in Co Cork, which was unable to get any post into the local depot after the main bridge leading into the town was closed due to the build-up of ice.

Deliveries in counties Sligo and Leitrim were also slow yesterday.

Backlogs were also created by treacherous routes last week in parts of north and south Co Dublin

However, An Post expects service to return to normal today for as long as the thaw continues.
