FG councillor who sparked storm of protests is temporarily suspended
THE Fine Gael councillor who provoked a storm of protest after announcing his refusal to represent black Africans has been suspended from his job pending a disciplinary inquiry.
Darren Scully, who resigned as mayor of Naas in Co Kildare last week over the controversy, said his livelihood is now in jeopardy and he won't find out until later this week whether he will still have a job.
The councillor, who is married with two small children, works as a structural engineer for a private company which he declined to name. Mr Scully yesterday confirmed his suspension to the Sunday Independent.
The councillor was subjected to a torrent of criticism since he said last Tuesday that he would no longer represent black Africans in his area because of their attitude. "I have been met with aggressiveness and bad manners," he said in a radio interview last Tuesday.
Celebrities to join promenade protest
A HOST of celebrities including Diarmuid Gavin, Miss Ireland Holly Carpenter, Cian Healy, PJ Gallagher and Niall Toibin will join join a march from Alfie Byrne Road to Clontarf Rugby Club, Castle Avenue, today to encourage people to make submissions against Dublin City Council's Flood Defence Plan for the promenade, which will be discussed at its meeting tomorrow.
The controversial plan involves the construction of a flood wall, which would block off views over Bull Island.
One Dublin winner of €2.6m Lotto
THERE was one winner of last night's €2,652,968 Lotto jackpot. The winning ticket was sold in Dublin and the numbers were 6, 8, 22, 24, 34, 38 (bonus 31).
There were no Match 5+bonus winners but there were 42 Match 5s who each get €1,812; 123 Match 4+bonus (€155); 2,172 Match 4s (€54); 2,851 Match 3+bonus (€27); and 36,665 Match 3s (€5 scratchcard). The Lotto Plus 1 numbers were 4, 15, 16, 18, 33, 43 (bonus 5). The Lotto Plus 2 numbers were 7, 23, 24, 35, 37, 44 (bonus 32).
And in the UK draw for a stg£4.1m prize, the numbers were 13, 16, 25, 26, 36, 46 (bonus 15).
Three men held over weapons raids
TWO pipe bombs, firearms, ammunition and cash have been recovered in a series of garda raids in Kilkennny. Six searches were carried out in the south Kilkenny area in connection with investigations into burglaries and robberies in the area. The pipe bombs were said to be in the early stages of manufacture.
Three men, aged in their 20s, were arrested and are being held at Thomastown and Waterford garda stations.
Hundreds march over ambulance plan
Around 800 people took part yesterday in a march through Skibbereen to protest plans by the Health Service Executive to bring about changes to the local ambulance service in west Cork.
Retired farmer leaves €1.7m in will
Bernard Carragher, a farmer of Tara, Co Meath, who died on August 22, has left estate valued at €1,750,500.
