FG backs family in deportation case

Thursday December 18 2008
FINE Gael last night threw its support behind the plight of a Nigerian mother-of-two engaged in a court battle against her family's deportation. The party said Pamela Izevbekhai should be treated as a "special case" because of her genuine fears for her daughters.
Ms Izevbekhai, who is awaiting a decision from the European Court of Human Rights, says her daughters Naomi (7) and Jemima (6) are in danger of female genital mutilation.
Yesterday, Fine Gael's Alan Shatter said the case should be taken out of the courts and a "humanitarian approach" adopted instead.
Ms Izevbekhai said she was "hopeful" a solution could be found.
