Feeling the s-train of daily commute
Monday November 24 2003
'Psychological Effects of Commuting in Dublin', published yesterday, differs sharply from studies in other major cities which found no difference in stress amongst those who drive and those using public transport to get to work.
People who travel to work by Dart or train reported worse stress and more negative moods than any other methods of travel.
They identified cramped, dirty carriage conditions as worsening an already demanding journey, study co-author Brendan O'Regan said.
The study, co-authored with Dr Finian Buckley, found those who walk to work suffered the least stress, although women walkers had additional fears for personal safety.
The research was presented at the 34th annual Psychological Society of Ireland conference.
