Faith to the fore as Katie champions new radio station

Thursday January 27 2011

Katie Taylor spoke candidly yesterday about her deep devotion to her faith and how her belief has spurned her on to success in the ring.

The young star was brought up a Christian and practises every week at St Mark's Pentecostal Church on Pearse Street in Dublin.

"I was brought up as a Christian and it is the most important thing to me, having God in my life and having that hope," she said.

"Even my boxing career wouldn't be what it is if I didn't have God in my life -- the word of God, reading the Bible, the direction and guidance for your life. Even if things go wrong for me, I always have that hope that things are going to work out OK.

"Every time I step into the ring, it is God who is strengthening me in there.

"It has always been that way. I probably should be reading more than I have, but I try to read some of the bible every day."

Her comments came at the launch of Ireland's first Christian radio station, Spirit, which will broadcast today in Dublin on 89.9FM, Cork (90.9), Limerick (89.9), Galway (91.7) and Waterford (90.1).

It will launch across Ireland on AM by July 2012.

The new station, which is funded by the listeners, will play contemporary Christian music alongside a mix of mainstream, positive chart music. It will also discuss topics with a Christian interpretation on them.

"This is not about religious issues. It is not a religious issues station. What it is, is a station that assumes a certain Christian bedrock and operates from that grid," Ronan Johnston, one of the presenters, said.

Ms Taylor is to receive the freedom of Wicklow later today.
