Employees cost economy €700m in time spent Tweeting while at work

Sunday September 19 2010

Irish workers are costing the economy more than €700m a year on time spent browsing social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

In a survey of more than 1,000 workers, Irishjobs.ie found that more than half of workers admit to using such sites to update profiles, broadcast messages and share pictures and videos throughout their working day.

The survey by the leading recruitment website suggests that 65,000 employees are spending more than an hour per day tweeting, wall posting and messaging.

Paper's staff face pension/wage cuts

Staff at the Irish Examiner/Evening Echo newspapers were told yesterday that their pensions could be cut by 50 per cent or more after management revealed a €20m deficit in the company defined-benefit pension fund. Three hundred staff were summoned to a meeting and also told that they would have to accept pay cuts of 10 per cent.

During a three-and-a-half hour long meeting -- which was described as tense, angry and emotional -- the staff of the Cork-based national newspaper were told that these measures were necessary to secure their future.

The company said the deficit derived mainly from poor investment performance and not mismanagement.
