THE National Transport Authority has given €500,000 to Dublin City Council to expand the capital's hugely successful bike scheme, the Irish Independent has learned.

Two new stations will have between 20 to 25 bikes and will be rolled out before the end of the year.

Over €300,000 has been designated for a new bicycle station in the city's docklands area, with a further €200,000 set aside for the 'Heuston Quarter'.

As it stands there are 540 bikes in 44 stations across the city.

Dublin City Council said last night it has an ambitious 14-phase plan aimed at providing 5,000 bikes and 300 stations across the city.

However, it refused to reveal the exact amount they would invest in the scheme.

"But it is anticipated that work will commence on the expansion of the bike scheme later in the year," a council spokesperson said last night.

"I welcome the scheme and this proves when the city provides alternative modes of transport people will avail of the varying kinds of transport at their disposal," said Labour Cllr Dermot Lacey last night.
