Death of man in custody still a mystery
A POST-mortem examination has failed to establish the cause of death of a 58-year-old man who became ill while in garda custody.
The Garda Ombudsman Commission is investigating the death of the man who was naked when he was stopped and arrested on the street in Sutton, on the northside of Dublin, shortly before midnight on Thursday.
Gardai believe the man had been involved in an incident earlier in an apartment at Grange Lodge Avenue in Clongriffin, Donaghmede, and may have sustained an injury there.
As the man was being detained for public order offences, gardai noticed that he looked unwell and called an ambulance.
Tests
The man was taken to Beaumont hospital where he was pronounced dead at around 1am yesterday.
A post-mortem examination was later carried out by the State Pathologist Marie Cassidy but proved to be inconclusive. Toxicology and other tests will now be completed to help determine the cause of death.
Meanwhile, gardai sealed off two scenes at Bayside and Clongriffin in Dublin for detailed forensic examination.
A spokesman for the Garda Ombudsman Commission said an investigation was standard procedure under the Garda Siochana Act when a person died following contact with gardai.
