A FORMER Ireland rugby international is to stand trial in the Circuit Criminal Court after he was charged with dangerous driving causing the death of a teenager.

Eddie Halvey, of Alandale Hall, South Circular Road, Co Limerick, was yesterday ordered by Judge Michael Reilly to appear before Nenagh Circuit Criminal Court on February 13 next.

Halvey, who also played rugby for Munster and Shannon rugby club, is charged with dangerous driving, causing the death of 16-year-old Kevin Walsh, from Sycamore Drive, Bruff, Co Limerick.

He is also charged with driving under the influence of excess alcohol on the same occasion.

The defendant, wearing a blue shirt, tie and black jacket, was yesterday presented with the book of evidence by Garda Declan O'Carroll of Nenagh Garda Station at the local district court.

During the brief hearing, Detective Inspector Bob Noonan said there was no objection to the accused being remanded on continuing bail.

Judge Reilly also told Halvey that if he wished to enter an alibi in the case or call on any witnesses, he would have to notify prosecution and also produce witness names and addresses 14 days in advance of any trial. Halvey was also ordered to reappear before the same court again on March 23 in connection with the Section 49 drink-driving charge.

The case against Halvey came about following a two-vehicle collision which occurred on the N7, near the village ofToomevara, Co Tipperary in the early hours of April 1 last.
