Cyclist road victim was due to attend wedding

A CYCLIST who was due to attend a family wedding, died after being struck by a car. Last night she was named as Carmel O'Brien, from Sheerin's Cross, Kilmallock, Co Limerick.

The married 49-year-old died after her bicycle was hit by a car shortly after 6.50am yesterday.

The collision occurred about 2km outside Bruff on the main Kilmallock Road.

Ms O'Brien, who was a regular cyclist, was out for a morning cycle travelling in the direction of Bruff when the car, which was travelling in the opposite direction, struck her.

It is understood the victim was looking forward to attending a family wedding later yesterday.

Her body was removed to the Mid Western Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The main Bruff to Kilmallock road was closed off for several hours to enable gardai carry out atechnical examination of the scene.

The road re-opened after the examination and detectives spent yesterday trying to establish the cause of the collision which occurredon a straight stretch of road.

Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to contact Bruff Garda Station on 061-382940.
