Skipper of intercepted boat faces charges

By Fergus Black

Wednesday September 01 2010

AN Irish trawler skipper whose boat was intercepted for the second time in 24 hours by the navy last night said he had been effectively put out of business.

The Creadan Lady, a mussel dredger which had been fishing for mussel seed off the east coast, had been escorted into Arklow harbour on Monday after it was boarded by officers from the LE Aoife for alleged breach of fishing regulations.

But when the vessel returned to sea yesterday it was again intercepted and detained.

Its skipper and owner, Paul Barlow, is to appear in court today on charges connected with the incident.

Mr Barlow, said: "We are not fishermen, we are farmers. If we have no mussel seed we have no future."
