Blind man pleads guilty to killing father of three
Tuesday June 16 2009
A BLIND man has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of a father-of-three in Dublin's south inner city last year.
Michael Byrne (37), of Clonard Road, Crumlin, Dublin 12, was charged with murdering Denis Brennan (60) at Bowbridge Court, Kilmainham, Dublin, between July 5 and July 8, 2008.
Byrne's plea of not guilty to murder but guilty of manslaughter was accepted at the Central Criminal Court yesterday.
Defence barrister Isobel Kennedy told Mr Justice Paul Carney that her client was now legally blind and, as a result, was finding it difficult to sign on daily.
He was wearing dark glasses in court and using a cane.
There were calls of "scumbag" as he left the court.
Mr Justice Carney remanded him on continuing bail until sentencing on July 27.
