Court post bags destroyed after shredding error
TWO post bags delivered to the Four Courts have been shredded by mistake.
The shredding was last night blamed on "human error" and although documents in relation to significant cases are relayed directly to the courts through the legal DX posting system, the error could affect hundreds of people who attempted to liaise with the courts or send money by way of cheque or postal order to pay fines.
Yesterday, the Courts Service, which supports the judiciary and users of the courts, placed advertisements in the national press asking those who posted mail to the Four Courts in recent days to contact the relevant office to see if their mail had arrived.
The post bags were "inadvertently destroyed" after an outside contractor, who shreds documents, mistakenly added two bags of mail to his bags of documents for shredding.
"There is no question of a breach of confidentiality, or any documents going astray, as the documents and letters were shredded on site," said a spokesperson for the Courts Service last night.
"The Courts Service has placed advertisements in the national press asking those who may have posted mail to the Four Courts in the past few days and who have not received a receipt, or acknowledgment of same, to contact the relevant office to ascertain if their letter was received or not," the spokesperson added.
