Council defends 'life-saving' new 30kmh limit

Monday February 08 2010

DUBLIN City Council has defended a controversial new speed limit that has fuelled the ire of motorists across the capital.

The local authority yesterday said the 30kmh limit in the centre of the city was in line with best international practice and had been put in place to save lives.

Motorists have been angered by the new rules, which stretch across a zone 2km north to south and 1.5km east to west.

In a statement released yesterday, Dublin City Council said a 'green wave' traffic light system – where lights are synchronised with the speed limit – had been extended to the new areas where the 30kmh limit applies.

"Dublin City Council would like to assure all road users that traffic flow in the city is being monitored 24/7 by the council's traffic control centre. Any further traffic signalling adjustments will be implemented asrequired," the statement said.

There has been significant anger at the new speeds, whichsome motorists say falsely slowtraffic in areas such as the quays.

The zone extends from Bolton Street to Kevin Street and includes St Stephen’s Green,Gardiner Street, Dame Streetand Dawson Street.
