Commuters face raft of fare hikes

By DON LAVERY

Sunday February 05 2012

COMMUTERS, students, families and children who use pre-paid Dublin Bus tickets all face fare increases later this month.

The hardest hit will be those who use the popular adult Travel 90, 10-journey tickets which will increase from €19 to €21.50, an increase of €2.50, or 13.2 per cent. Children who use the schoolchild 10-journey tickets will see an increase of 50c to €7.00, while the scholar ticket will also go up by 50c to €10.50.

The increases were sanctioned by the National Transport authority who said there would be an average increase of 5.6pc and will come into effect from February 19.

The travelwide monthly ticket is up from €100 to €105; while the travelwide annual ticket goes up from €1,000 to €1,050. One of the lower increases is for the rambler child ticket, which goes up from €7 to €7.30. Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of Iarnrod Eireann's InterCity fares will increase from today.

The new fare pricing structure will be distance-based, so the longer the journey, the more expensive the ticket.
