In a report published in yesterday's Irish Independent on the death of Ranelagh solicitor Nora Gallagher we published a picture purporting to be Ms Gallagher.

Gardai search for body after tip-off

Members of the garda technical team in conjunction with officers in Co Longford carried out the dig at Kilmahon cemetery near Drumlish. It's understood gardai were acting on a tip-off. The investigation at the scene of the cemetery is expected to continue again today, as no remains were found in yesterday's search.

€10,000 for girl struck by popcorn

A LITTLE girl who was struck on the cheek by a piece of popping popcorn has been awarded €10,000. The Circuit Civil Court heard yesterday that then four-year-old Kerri Rafferty suffered a burn just under her right eye.

A piece of popcorn had popped out of an oven in Bus Stop News Agents, Ballyfermot, Dublin, in November 2005. Stephen Palmer, trading as Bus Stop News Agents, Ballyfermot, and Macoven MP, a popcorn vending machine maker, made an offer of €10,100.

Bread to blame for bird deaths

NATURE lovers have been warned not to feed ducks bread but to bring them only healthy greens. Cork City Council made the appeal in a bid to avoid a repeat of an horrific contamination outbreak that killed 80 swans, ducks and geese.

Experts believe people who fed bread to the birds may have contributed to the problem, with the uneaten or semi-digested foodstuffs contributing to high nutrient levels in the water. The build-up of nutrients promotes the spread of dangerous bacteria and causes deadly infections.

Woman 'speeding to reach a toilet'

A woman told a judge yesterday that she was speeding to get to a loo.

Referring to the fact that there were no facilities on the roads, Judge Murrough Connellan, at Wicklow District Court, wondered where all the money people paid for roads went. He dismissed the charge against Michelle Pimley (31), of Broadfield Court, Rathcoole.
