Clare in bid to rename University of Limerick
COUNTY councillors in Clare have agreed to formally request the University of Limerick to change its name in recognition of the role played by the neighbouring county in the institution.
At a meeting of Clare County Council on Monday night, Fianna Fail councillor Cathal Crowe proposed that a letter be written to the governing body of UL "asking that due consideration be given to renaming" the university, 'The University of Limerick and Clare'.
Since 2000, UL has expanded its campus on to the northern bank of the river Shannon into Clare.
"Over the coming years, as much as half of the overall university could be built on the Clare side of the river Shannon," Mr Crowe said.
"It is only right that this should be acknowledged in a meaningful and highly symbolic way -- renaming the university would achieve this."
