Choir on song with early festive cheer

By Patricia McDonagh

Tuesday November 02 2010

CHRISTMAS came early -- 50 days early to be precise -- to Dublin yesterday.

The dust had barely settled on the capital's Halloween celebrations when a troupe of carollers from the Piccolo Lasso Children's Choir assembled in front of a snow-covered Mansion House to spread a little festive cheer.

What the event lacked in authenticity -- the snow was fake and it was a little early for 'Jingle Bells' -- it made up for in charm, with the kids getting into the swing of things as Lord Mayor Gerry Breen launched a winter programme of events designed to entice visitors to the city and raise €1bn in revenue for hard-pressed businesses.

The celebrations will begin on November 21 with the switching on of the street lights, Christmas carols, a 3D light projection show on the GPO, circus performances and an early visit from Santa.

Dublin's Mansion House will host a festive trade expo and will be wrapped in a bow to add a touch of sparkle.

On November 29, participating shops and hotels will provide knock-down prices for 'Senior Citizen Shopping Day' while children can enjoy an elf hunt and 'Kids Go Free' promotions in restaurants throughout the city on December 8.

The traditional shopping day will also see the opening of the live animal crib at the Mansion House.

The popular Christmas market at the Docklands also makes a return. Opening on December 3, the market will feature brightly decorated wooden chalets with gifts and festive decorations.
