Charities get on board Trap's mountain climb

Wednesday February 08 2012

TAOISEACH Enda Kenny's ramble with soccer boss Giovanni Trapattoni to the summit of Croagh Patrick on April 28 is to become a major fundraiser for local charities.

The Irish Independent revealed at the weekend that Mr Kenny confirmed the climb and said he hopes other walkers will join them.

FAI president John Delaney will also take part in the climb.

Mr Trapattoni paid a fleeting visit to the base of the mountain at Murrisk last year and was presented with a blackthorn climbing stick by local trader Kevin Maloney.

Later, the Italian expressed a desire to make the climb in thanksgiving if Ireland was lucky enough to reach the finals.

A group known as 'The Kilimanjaro Nine' -- who climbed the highest mountain in Africa with Mr Kenny some years ago -- is also preparing to remobilise for the Croagh Patrick challenge.

The climb will be made just three weeks before Ireland's first game in the Euro 2012 championships.

After an artery operation last year, Mr Trappatoni (70) is said to be fighting fit for the challenge.
