Champion to sell off his treasured clubs for charity

Friday December 18 2009

PADRAIG Harrington will stage the garage sale of the century in Dundrum Town Centre tomorrow.

Ireland's triple-Major Champion has decided to sell off many of the golf clubs, shirts, hats, gloves, books and other souvenirs accumulated during 12 world-beating years as a pro.

Harvey Nichols have agreed that Harrington can turn part of their premises at Dundrum centre into an Aladdin's Cave for golfers and souvenir-fiends.

Every item purchased, from tee-pegs to cashmere jumpers and golf shoes to high-tech drivers, will be autographed by the Dubliner, with every cent going to Third World charity GOAL.

Harrington will also bring along his two replica Claret Jugs and the US PGA trophy and happily pose for a picture with anyone prepared to make a donation.

"I must have 150 Kartel Shirts, 300 Open books, 75 putters, 50 drivers, close to 100 wedges, more than 20 sets of irons," said Harrington, adding he'd "no idea" how much the venture will generate.

His decision to clean out his golf room was prompted by a rule change which in the New Year will make many of the clubs he's played with illegal for professional golf -- though they can still be used by amateurs.

Once he decided to sell them off for charity "the idea took on a life of its own. I've had to rope in 20 friends to come down and help," he explained.

"My wife, Caroline, had the telephone number of everybody down there at Harvey Nichols, which really scares me," Harrington joked.

"I'm very grateful to managing director Kenny Robertson and his staff for making room for us."
