Catch a fantastic view of Saturn and its magnificent rings -- by telescope Wildlife course at the Bog of Allen Dublin Choir gets a Canadian flavour
Some of the biggest and most powerful telescopes in the country will be set up all over Ireland next Friday night to give you the chance to see Saturn, the ringed planet, and probably the most spectacular sight you will ever witness. Saturn is a gigantic gas planet that features a beautiful ring system that was formed millions of years ago when old moons smashed into each other and spread debris around the planet. These rings are only approximately 20m in thickness, but measure 114,000km across!
Telescopes will be set up from 9pm on Friday, April 15, at locations nationwide. A full list can be found online at www.astronomy.ie People are invited to visit their nearest Saturn Watch, where experienced astronomers will be on hand to answer questions. "Out of all the amazing things there are to see in the sky, Saturn will always be a personal favourite of astronomers all over the world," said David Moore, Chairman of Astronomy Ireland.
Wildlife course at the Bog of Allen
Are you interested in the habitats and wildlife of Ireland? Then the Irish Peatland Conservation Council's one-day 'Introduction to Habitat Management' special interest adult course is for you. It will be held on April 27 from 9.15am-5pm at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre.
Participants will get an overview of managing, monitoring and measuring habitats and their wildlife in Ireland. The course is based both indoors and outdoors with a hands-on approach to learning. Dublin Choir gets a Canadian flavour
THE Dublin County Choir will add an international flavour to their performance at the National Concert Hall on Saturday, April 16, when they are joined by a group from Canada. Le Choeur Polyphonique de Levis, from Quebec will combine with the Dublin group to make up a choir of over 160 voices in a varied programme.
It will range from the operatic pop drama of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to a 16th century spectacular for two choirs, 'The Magnificat', by German composer Heinrich Schutz. The choirs will be conducted by Colin Block and will feature soloists Roisin O'Grady, Cliona McDonough, Jacek Wislocki and Jeffrey Ledwidge. They will be accompanied by John Dexter on organ, Celine Kelly on keyboard and Jean-Eudes Beaulieu on piano, with the Orchestra of St Cecilia. Tickets €20/€25 from www.nch.ie or 01 4170000.
