Capital idea. . . hero to have street named after him

Wednesday December 28 2005

AN Irish naval hero who has 1,200 streets called after him in Argentina is finally to get one named in his honour in Ireland.

Admiral William Brown will be recognised in one of five new street names in the capital, which are to be created off Sir Rogerson's Quay as a part of a major redevelopment.

A spokeswoman for the Dublin Docklands Development Authority said yesterday: "We were looking for something related to our marine heritage and this is one of the big stories."

The Admiral Brown Society said it was "delighted" with the move.

"With over 1,200 streets in Argentina named after him it was time his own town, county and country recognised the heroic deeds of this great man," said JJ O'Hara, president of the Admiral Brown Society.

He called on Brown's native county of Mayo to follow suit in the lead up to major celebrations planned for 2007, the 150th anniversy of Brown's death.
