Brian Kearney sentenced to life

Wednesday March 05 2008

South Dublin man Brian Kearney has been convicted of strangling Siobhán Kearney, his 38-year-old wife and mother of one, to death at their home two years ago.

The jury returned the verdict by a majority of 11 to 1.

Earlier this afternoon, the jurors were brought back into the court and were asked if they'd reached a verdict, to which the foreman replied "no."

Mr Justice White said they had been deliberating for in excess of five hours at that stage, and that a verdict in a criminal trial was a matter for the individual conscience of each and every member of the jury. He said it should not be a verdict of attrition.

The judge told the jury of eight women and four men they now had the option to return a majority verdict on which at least ten of them were agreed.

The 51-year-old, from Knocknashee Goatstown was handed down the mandatory life sentence by Mr Justice Barry White.

Siobhán Kearney's body was found by her father after he had to force her locked bedroom door in, on the morning of the 28th of February 2006.

She died as a result of ligature strangulation.
