Arrest teen 'brain damaged'

Friday May 09 2003

A SENIOR garda was last night heading up a probe into how a teenager suffered serious injuries after being released from garda custody.

John Maloney (18) of Cashel Road, Crumlin, Dublin, was found unconscious last Sunday morning lying on a footpath on the Beaufort Estate in Rathfarnham, close to the station.

Last night he was "critical but stable" in Tallaght Hospital.

His father Mr John Maloney said: "The doctors told me John is badly brain damaged and might die. My heart is broken."

He added that his son should not have been anywhere near Beaufort Estate after his release from custody. If he had been going home to Crumlin he would have walked the other way.

The teenager was arrested along with friend Alan Kennedy (18) at 8.30am on Sunday after gardai found them pushing a car they said they bought from Travellers for ?100. They were taken to Rathfarnham Garda Station on suspicion of possession of drugs. The pair were searched but no drugs were found and they were released shortly after 9am.

Yesterday, Supt Ollie Hanley of Dun Laoghaire Garda Station and detectives were trying to establish the exact circumstances into how the teenager sustained his injuries.
