And this little piggy .... missed his day in court

IT WAS a case about artiodactyl mammals which could have had enormous implications for the Irish farming industry.

The aforesaid mammals - or "pigs" in common parlance - do not just smell, they can be bad for your hearing as well, a farm manager was ready to tell a judge yesterday. The merest sniff of such a suggestion was one which, in the aftermath of the Army deafness claims, had already caused some consternation.

But before the case came before the High Court court yesterday the piggery manager who claimed he had suffered deafness as a result of the noise of squealing pigs settled his action against the piggery owner.

Henry Willock (32) of Drumanespic, Bailieborough, Co Cavan, brought his claim against Con McEnroe, of Eigher, Virginia, Co Cavan.

Liam Gaynor SC, for Mr Willock, said the action could be struck out.

Settlement details were not announced.

Mr Willock alleged he had been diagnosed with severe hearing loss as a result of being exposed to undue, excessive or prolonged exposure to noise from the animals.
