Amnesty boss to call on council for support in providing women's refuge Coveney to bolster pay-cut proposal
Sunday November 29 2009
Amnesty International Ireland's Executive Director Colm O'Gorman will tomorrow call on Laois County Council to support the provision of a women's refuge for the county.
"At present there is no sanctuary for women experiencing domestic violence in Laois," said Mr O'Gorman. "Many women and children are forced to flee to Dublin for safety because the proper protections are just not available. The single biggest reason a woman does not leave her partner is that she has nowhere else to go. By failing to provide appropriate facilities for these women we condemn them to abusive situations."
Coveney to bolster pay-cut proposal
Simon Coveney will be supporting a proposal to be put to the Fine Gael party meeting on Wednesday calling for graduated pay cuts in the public sector above salary levels of €35,000 a year. The TD stresses that this is not yet FG's point of view and is anxious to recognise the right of the party to disagree, but hopes the party will support it.
The cuts would operate as follows:
- No reduction to anyone's salary below €35,000 a year.
- A five per cent reduction for the portion of salary above €35,000 up to €100,000.
- 10 per cent reduction above €100,000 up to €200,000.
- 20 per cent reduction above €200,000.
As Fine Gael is unveiling its economic strategy on Friday, this is a crunch decision for the party.
