Ahern pays tribute to former adviser
FORMER Taoiseach Bertie Ahern last night paid heartfelt tribute to a "wonderful, decent man", following the death of his long-time adviser, Gerry Hickey.
Mr Hickey (67) passed away after fighting a brave three-year battle with cancer.
He served as Programme Manager under Mr Ahern -- chief adviser to the Taoiseach and one of the most powerful positions in the country.
"Gerry Hickey was a wonderful, decent man with a huge commitment to public service. I worked closely with him for 20 years and he was a wise, loyal and hard-working colleague," Mr Ahern said.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret, children, Susan, Ciara and Barry and his granddaughter, Mia. His removal takes place from his home this evening, to St Fintan's Church, Sutton, arriving at 5.30pm. His funeral will be tomorrow, after 10am Mass, to Glasnevin Cemetery.
