Agency takes legal case over Mail's 'fake' Tribune

By Aideen Sheehan

Saturday February 12 2011

THE National Consumer Agency (NCA) has initiated legal action against the publisher of the 'Irish Mail on Sunday' over its imitation of the 'Sunday Tribune' front page last week.

"The National Consumer Agency has today initiated proceedings against Associated Newspapers (Ireland) Ltd, publishers of the 'Irish Mail on Sunday', in relation to breaches of the Consumer Protection Act, 2007," the NCA said in a statement yesterday.

The 'Sunday Tribune' went into receivership last week and won't be published for four weeks while the receiver seeks a buyer. The 'Mail' said its Sunday Tribune-style edition was "a special edition designed for readers of the Sunday Tribune".

Independent News and Media (INM) has called for the 'Mail' to be expelled from the newspaper industry body National Newspapers Ireland over the stunt.

The 'Irish Mail on Sunday' said it would "vigorously defend any charges brought against us for promoting our paper".

"We defend our right to tell 'Sunday Tribune' readers that we are now the only Irish paper prepared to expose the corruption, cronyism and political skulduggery that has blighted our country," the paper said in a statement last night.
