75-year-old in race to become governor

Tuesday October 10 2006

ENTERING your first political race at the sprightly age of 75 is hardly what the doctor ordered, but Limerick man Malachy McCourt is relishing the task, writes Barry Duggan.

And the Manhattan resident didn't pick any old election to break his duck as he is the Green Party's candidate for the November 7 election of governor of New York.

"I'm exposing myself and my family to all sorts of insults and heckling, but it is great fun," said Mr McCourt

Brought to Limerick at the age of three, Malachy grew up in the city before returning to the US.

After a colourful career, which included a Broadway stint, Mr McCourt made a name for himself through radio shows and newspaper columns.

"I was told I was doing a lot of yapping about political stuff and why didn't I do something about it. So I am," he said.

Malachy needs 50,000 votes to allow the Green Party of New York state regain automatic ballot status at the next election.
