12 die in four days of road carnage

By Jason O'Brien

Monday July 02 2007

A 16-YEAR-OLD youth who borrowed a car from a family friend was one of 12 people killed on the roads over the past four days.

Seven of those died over the weekend, making it one of the worst for road accidents this year.

Ten people died in the final three days of last month, ending hopes that June 2007 would record the lowest figure for deaths in the month since 1980.

And a male cyclist in his 50s died yesterday, becoming the first death of what is statistically the most dangerous month on our roads.

The latest casualties bring to 167 the number who have died on the roads this year, although road deaths have dropped by almost 25pc in the last ten months.

However, the Road Safety Authority warned that July is the most dangerous month on the roads, with an average of 40 people losing their lives in each of the past seven years.

"Despite the fact that there have been 10 people killed in the last three days it still has been a very, very safe June, if you can call it such a thing," Brian Farrell of the RSA said.
