€10m plan to restore 1916 Rising HQ

Saturday September 10 2011

PLANS to restore buildings where the last stand of the 1916 Rising rebels took place have been submitted to a government department.

Chartered Land, the company behind a massive redevelopment of O'Connell Street, have asked Heritage Minister Jimmy Deenihan to allow it to restore numbers 14-17 Moore Street in Dublin to open a commemorative centre in time for the 100th anniversary of the Rising.

It is understood that NAMA will be asked to fund the works.

Dublin City councillors were told on Wednesday that an application would be made to draw down the €10m needed for the centre, if the Government approved the plans.

"It appears they (Chartered Land) have submitted a consent application," councillor Ray McAdam (FG) said. "It will be a small commemorative centre based on the Anne Frank Centre in Holland."

The houses on Moore Street were declared a national monument because they were the final headquarters of the Provisional Government, which included five of the Proclamation signatories -- Pearse, Connolly, Plunkett, Clarke and McDermott.
