Dirty bed linen and bath towels are the main bugbear for hotel guests, according to a poll.
The Direct Line insurance company found the next biggest cause for complaint was drunk or noisy neighbouring guests, followed by building work being carried out close to the property.
Guests also have little time for poor quality food at their hotel, or for being hassled by travel reps to go on excursions, according to the survey of more than 2,000 British adults.
A number of those questioned also criticised fellow travellers who claim the best poolside sun loungers by laying their towels down at the start of the day.
Last year Alex Polizzi, best known for her role as The Hotel Inspector on Channel Five, listed her biggest hotel pet hates. She placed tatty frontages, a lack of decent lighting, poor coffee-making facilities, unnecessary children's menus and a lack of cleanliness among her top ten. Towel art, hotel staff who solicit tips, and mealtime interruptions were also criticised.
Readers responded to her article by revealing their own hotel bugbears.
Among the pet hates most commonly cited were an overabundance of cushions ("Cushions everywhere. I counted 22 cushions in one place we stayed at. People who put cushions on beds should be smothered with them"), turn down services ("Anybody that needs their beds turned down for them should think about hitting the gym more often"), confusing taps ("Why are the taps in the bathroom so complicated to use you need a degree in process engineering"), and the loo roll triangle ("Why on Earth do they insist on folding the end of the loo paper into a triangle? All I have to do is unfold it. A tough ask when you're heavily jet-lagged").
Extortionate Wi-Fi charges, inflexibility regarding check-in and check-out times, over-enthusiastic American waiters, card-entry systems, and noisy air conditioning were also found to have angered readers.
