GETting THERE

Flights to Amman from Heathrow start at €270 one-way with Royal Jordanian (0044 8719 112 112; rj.com). Fly to Heathrow with Aer Lingus (0818 365 044; aerlingus.com). A one-day pass to Petra costs 50JD (about €52). While blizzards are rare, it's best to avoid travel in December and January, and midsummer, when temperatures are very high.

STAYING THERE

Most visitors to Jordan spend their first night in the capital of Amman. The Kempinski Hotel (+962 6 5200 200; kempinski.com/amman) is in a great location, with a top-notch restaurant. Rooms start at €145 with breakfast.

IS JORDAN SAFE?

Though there is no conflict in Jordan itself, the Department of Foreign Affairs advises exercising caution in the country, and to avoid travel to the Syrian border area.
