A collection of 65 photos of teddy bears taken by a Dublin photographer that became a viral sensation, is hitting the shelves in book format in the US today.
A simple photo of his son Calum’s much loved and squeezed teddy Peter Rabbit led photographer Mark Nixon to take over 60 photos of battered and bruised teddies.
Mark explains how the project took off: “I noticed how much Calum loved his teddy, squeezing him and shoving him in his face that I just wanted to capture that.”
An interview with Tom Dunne on Newstalk led to people calling on his Clontarf studio in North Dublin and sending him their beloved teddies and their life stories.
Teddies arrived by Fed Ex from Canada and the US, but it is mostly Irish teddies that occupy the pages of the book.
One Eyed Ted or Aloysius, the bear of the late Gerry Ryan is featured on the back of the book. There is still a trace of the late presenter’s mother’s lipstick visible on his mouth. He is now being cared for by Gerry’s daughter Babette.
Mark is delighted with the appeal of the photos, which were featured on his website, and led to him getting over six million hits, before he was contacted by a US publishing house which offered him a five figure book deal that hits the shelves in the US today, and will be on sale in Ireland in the coming weeks.
