F First major wave of Irish emigration to the US occurs in 1710 with over 200,000 Scots-Irish leaving Ulster, mostly for the Appalachian region.

F Up to 2.3 million people leave Ireland for America between 1845 and 1855 in the wake of the famine, said Peter Quinn, author of Looking for Jimmy: A Search for Irish America.

F Irish teenager Annie Moore (featured in the painting, above), who arrived in New York on January 1, 1892 was the first official immigrant registered at Ellis Island.

F Tourists heading to Ireland this year are expected to generate about €3.7 billion in revenue, with €170 million coming solely from The Gathering.
