Five ways to keep your smartphone safe

Thursday November 18 2010

1 Keep PINs safe Use a pin code for access and make it a good one, not 0000 or 1234. If you use Bluetooth, change the default PIN code to a less obvious one.

2 Using Bluetooth and WiFi Turn Bluetooth off if you're not using it and where possible only use WiFi with the encryption enabled. Hackers could access your phone remotely through these channels, so don't keep everything open.

3 Be a self censor Don't stay logged in to email or social networking sites and it is not a good idea to store pin codes on credit card details on your phone.

4 Downloading rules If downloading an app, check that the digital certificate is correct and make sure that you are downloading from a reputable source i.e. a google app should come directly from google and not from a non-google site.

5 Your info Back up your data regularly so you can still access it even if your phone is gone. When disposing of your phone remember to wipe your personal data. Install updates as provided by your operator.
