Say hello to the 'jesus phone'

Saturday June 27 2009

It is known simply as the 'Jesus Phone'. A device so sleek and so seductive, that it incites religious fervour in those who covet it.

Last week, Steve Jobs and Apple hit yet another home run with the long-awaited launch of the iPhone 3GS. Within just three days of the launch, Apple announced that more than one million new iPhones had been sold and six million customers had downloaded the new iPhone 3.0 software.

The news prompted the first comment from Jobs since he went on medical leave in January. "Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning," said Jobs.

Industry analysts noted that the success of the launch would distract some investors from concern about the health of Steve Jobs and would send a strong message that Apple could successfully create and debut a new product with or without their enigmatic leader.

But despite the hype that surrounds any new Apple launch, industry experts noted that the lines for this iPhone launch were significantly shorter than previous years.

The 3GS will launch in Ireland this weekend. According to industry analysts, the iPhone 16GB 3GS will cost €199 with the €45 per month iPhone 175 plan, or €79 on the iPhone 700 contract which costs €100 a month. The 32GB model will cost €299 or €169 on the same tariffs.
