More than half of women would rather not drive when abroad, according to a new survey.

Research suggests that female drivers find driving on the right-hand side of the road while abroad particularly daunting.

According to a poll of more than 2,000 drivers carried out by car-hire price-comparison website carhiremarket.com, 62pc are reluctant to drive abroad, compared with only 35pc of men.

Women are also much more likely to find driving on the right-hand side a challenge (49pc against 31pc men) and to struggle using a left-hand drive car (35pc vs 20pc).

Both men and women, however, confessed to finding driving abroad intimidating, with major concerns including misreading signs in a foreign language (32pc) and driving on unknown roads at night (39pc).

Overall, 8pc of drivers said that they were too scared to drive in a foreign country, while 13pc would drive if they had to, but would prefer to avoid it.
